The Canoe Bailer of Makali'i is an abstract, original 8" x 8" artwork that celebrates wayfinding and celestial navigation.
Anuenue the rainbow makes an appearance as well as the Hawai'ian starline Ke Ka o Makali'i which includes stars from Gemini and Taurus.
A blue sail shape represents the night sky. (The upside down contours of the sail were recreated in modern replicas of ocean going canoes informed by a petroglyph on the Big Island.)
A Koa leaf in the bottom right not only looks like a hull, but Koa wood was used to fashion canoes. Koa's small white flowers represnt the star Hokulei at the top.
Mixed media, wax, gold leaf, and acrylic on cradled birch panel, this beautiful piece captures the spirit of exploration and adventure that is a part of the culture of the Pacific Islands.
